British manufacturing since 1870
As the name suggests, the Edward Clay brand dates from the mid 19th century when Edward Clay was born in Ossett in 1844.

After working for the Ossett Board of Surveyors, Edward Clay with his son John started the business as rag and mungo merchants in 1870. In 1889 they moved the business from Prospect Road to our current headquarters on Wesley Street in Ossett and this eventually allowed them to expand into shoddy and mungo manufacturing.
Edward became the first Mayor of Ossett in 1890 and he continued to serve the company and the community until his death in 1921.
Sadly, John was struck down by ‘The Great Flu Epidemic’ in 1918. This resulted in his son Edward (3rd generation) being brought home to run the firm after his overseas duty during World War 1.
He was joined by his eldest son John (4th generation) after he had been serving in the FleetAir Arm during World War 2. He was joined by his brother Antony after he had completed his National Service in the Navy.
The business diversified into manufacturing flock and felt for the bedding industry, and this remains a core part of the business to this day.
John and Antony’s respective sons, Edward and John (5th generation) joined the business and it continues to expand and modernise. Diversifying again, it now also services the horticultural and packaging industries as well as various other sectors.
More recently, Luke (6th generation) has joined the business and with more commitment to innovation than ever before the company continues to prosper.
