Polishing and Buffing Wheels

Dense wool felt is the traditional material of choice for polishing and buffing applications. When formed into wheels or discs and mounted on a spindle, felt provides a firm yet compliant surface that carries polishing compounds effectively and delivers a consistent finish on metals, glass, stone, jewellery and precision-engineered components. The fibrous structure of wool felt holds abrasive compounds within the surface layer, releasing them progressively as the wheel rotates — a behaviour that foam or cloth alternatives cannot replicate with the same consistency.

Felt polishing wheels are used across industries including metalworking, optics, cutlery manufacture, silversmithing, aerospace component finishing and stonework. The density and hardness of the felt can be specified to suit the application, with harder, denser felts used for aggressive cutting and polishing, and softer grades used for final finishing and lapping.

Gaskets, Seals and Washers

Felt has been used as a gasketing material in mechanical assemblies for well over a century, and it remains a practical choice in many applications. Industrial felt applications in sealing include:

  • Shaft seals and wiper seals: Felt rings and strips fitted around rotating or reciprocating shafts to exclude dust, debris and contaminants while retaining lubrication
  • Gaskets: Compressed between mating surfaces to provide a conformable, oil-resistant seal in gearboxes, housings and light mechanical assemblies
  • Washers: Used as cushioning or sealing elements under bolts and fixings, preventing metal-to-metal contact and reducing fretting
  • Anti-vibration pads: Dense felt placed between components to absorb vibration and reduce noise transmission in machinery and equipment

Wool felt’s natural resilience — its ability to compress under load and recover when that load is removed — makes it well suited to these sealing and cushioning duties, particularly in applications involving repeated cycling or dynamic loading.

Oil Wicks and Lubrication Delivery

One of the most specialised industrial felt applications is the use of felt as an oil wick or lubrication delivery medium. Wool felt is naturally absorbent and will draw oil along its length by capillary action, making felt wicks an effective way to deliver a controlled, continuous flow of lubricant to bearings, slides, cams and other moving components. This approach is long established in clockmaking, textile machinery, printing machinery and a variety of precision mechanisms where a reliable, passive lubrication system is required.

The density and weight of the felt can be selected to control the rate of oil flow, and felt wicks can be cut and formed to fit complex geometries where conventional lubrication fittings would be impractical.

Vibration Damping and Noise Reduction

Dense industrial felt is an effective vibration-damping material. Placed between vibrating components and the structures they are mounted on, felt absorbs and dissipates mechanical energy that would otherwise be transmitted as noise or structural stress. This makes it useful in machine mounting, panel isolation, instrument housings and a wide range of industrial and commercial equipment applications.

The same acoustic properties that make felt valuable in sound proofing for buildings are at work in industrial vibration damping — the fibrous structure of needle-punch felt converts mechanical energy into heat, reducing vibration amplitude and the noise associated with it.
